A downloadable game

Greatvast is a 2D tile-based top-down video game made in Java using LibGDX.

[8/12/2024] - Version Dusk 0.01

This project is in its very early stages, and this page is for anyone who would like to download the game and see what it is. You are the player, named "Tom" (but the username is random), who explores a 2D tile-based infinite random-terrain generated world from a top down perspective.


The game:

  • The game will start with its title, background image, randomly generated username, play button, and quit button on the opening screen.
  • Select the "PLAY" button. Then select, "Create New World." The "World Name" does not really matter because you cannot save worlds in this version (so you will not see the name ever again). "If you would like to input a specific seed, enter one in the "World Seed" text box.
  • Hit "Create World," and the world will be created with you in the center of it.
  • You will spawn with some items in your hotbar.
  • Now, what will you do in this world? That is completely up to you. 
    • The game allows you to break things such as trees, flowers, and things in the caves.
    • The game allows you to fall down a square hole to enter the caves.
    • The game allows you to make planks from the logs you can collect. With planks, you can create wooden tools and chests (chests need at least 6 planks). [Also, this is all you can possibly craft in this version]
    • If it gets dark, you can sleep by placing a bed on the floor (right click) and then right clicking it.
    • Using torches, you can light up your world when it gets dark. Torches also help in the caves.
    • Using a pickaxe, you can mine the stone in the caves, and "go mining" to find some ores like coal, iron, or gold (they currently have no use).
    • You truly can experiment in this game and DO ANYTHING! (Ex: you can make a house out of unusable chests!)

This game may have many bugs and problems because this is an early prototype.

What do you do after downloading?

  • Unzip the zip file you downloaded by right-clicking the file and selecting extract all. This should open a new unzipped folder with the game in it.
  • Find the file named "Greatvast-Dusk-0.01.exe," and double click on it to open the game. If your computer thinks this may be malware, that is because I have not digitally signed the file to make the computer trust it. My game is not malware. Try to see if there is an option similar to "run anyway," and the game will then run.
